HISTORY
The Thai Association of University Women (TAUW) was founded on January 16, 1948. On July 1948, the TAUW became an affiliate of the International Federation of University Women, upholding the same ideal and principles.

One of the TAUW's first project was a Hostel Project which was established as a safe place to stay at a reasonable rental rate for female students.

OBJECTIVES

  1. To strengthen closer relations amongst members through activities and social functions;
  2. To encourage and give support to members for the advancement of their programs or doing research both in Thailand and foreign countries; To promote cooperation with other organizations national and international, especially with IFUW member associations in working for the development of women and disadvantaged communities.
  3. To disseminate innovations, technology, research findings which are deemed beneficial to women and their communities.

MEMBERSHIP

  1. Regular members: Graduates from Universities recognized by the IFUW;
  2. Associate members: Thai or foreign women graduated from any university or undergraduates with at least two years of university work;
  3. Honorary members: Outstanding persons who are invited and approved by the Board of the Committee and members at the annual meeting.

FINANCE
Source of financial support

  1. Membership fees;
  2. Fund raising and/or donations.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
In keeping with the goals of IFUW, the TAUW carries out its functions through various project activities as follows:

RURAL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND PROJECT FIVE-O THAILAND
Established a model for rural community development in Prajinburi Province with the co-operation of 5 local women's organizations affiliated to the International Federation of University Women.

The National Council of Women of Thailand, the Soroptomist of Bangkok and Dusit, the Business and Professional Women Federation (Bangkok) and the Thai Association of University Women.

The joint venture includes a day care centre, occupational training, home economics, agricultural trainings and practises iel. mushroom and basic agricultural farming, management and marketing skills, health service, literacy and primary health care training: workshop for primary school teachers in evaluation techniques, teach and quality of life development.

Objectives:

  1. To develope rural development models with women's organizations and government units working together to improve the standards of living of rural populations;
  2. To improve the quality of life of women, children and families in education, income;
  3. To introduce and apply new appropriate technology as to maximize productivity and to improve the efficiency of teaching and training;
  4. To identify and to develope local women leaders, so that they can better serve themselves and the other members in their communities.

Activities:

Outcomes: Since the Project has been in operation for about 10 years, there has been continuing progress to meet the objectives:

  1. Demonstration center to experiment new cultivated plants directed by district agriculture officers
  2. Center for distribution of plants (young plants seedlings) to villagers
  3. Due to the acceptance of the governmental agencies, the agriculture district used this center for training indiginous resource persons and farmers
  4. As the result of training the trainers (teachers, community leaders etc.) networks of knowledge and practice have been extended to students in 48 public schools and 40 groups of housewives families (around 9,000-10,000 persons each year). These people become better self-help persons.

In conclusion, Project Five-0 of Thailand has encouraged school-based community development.
