The 2001-2004 SAAP theme Humanizing Globalization: Empowering Women seeks to put a human face on the globalization process and to address its positive as well as negative impact on individuals and society. Its main focus is on humanitarian concerns raised by globalization, such as the need for empowering women, ensuring their access to education and information literacy, safeguarding women's human rights and human security, and engendering a culture of peace. This theme extends the examination of globalization in its widest context, first introduced in the 1998-2001 SAAP theme Globalization: Connections Through Education. IFUW believes that managing the forces of globalization is essential to its humanizing. The equal partnership of women in the economic, as well as social, political and technological spheres, is not merely one of several goals of globalization, it is a necessary condition for achieving true globalism. As an organization concerned with the role and status of women and girls, it is critical that IFUW identify how globalization impacts on our local and national governments, as well as our communities - socially, economically, politically and technologically - if we are to create a prosperous and peaceful world. The empowerment of women rests in our hands. Whenever we choose to act on issues which can contribute to peace, justice and equity for women, men and children, we are demonstrating the empowerment of women and providing for the humanization of globalization. The pages in this section offer an introduction to some of the main issues, ideas for action, topics for workshops and interdisciplinary seminars, as well as resource materials.
