RAUW General Assembly: Angelina Muganza elected as new RAUW President
28 August 2009
The Rwandan Association of University Women’s (RAUW) General Assembly on Sunday saw a unanimous decision to elect Angelina Muganza, Executive Secretary, Public Service Commission, as the new President of RAUW.
A delighted Muganza said she looks forward to improving on the work that RAUW has already performed in the development of gender equality in Rwanda.
“As the new President of RAUW I particularly want to ensure growth in the fields of promoting girls’ education and mentoring girls in high school,” she says. “I want us to continue assisting young women in taking a lead in their professions and generally to enhance their careers.”
“I also want to see the number of RAUW members continue to increase from our current 350 members. The more members we have and the more active those members are, the more women we can reach and help.”
Muganza also commented on the strength of the newly elected Council. “I am very excited to work with the new council members and I know I will learn from their experiences. These are women with commitment and very good experience in their professions,” she says. “They are already involved in different social development activities. They give time and resources for the wellbeing of others. They are women who are committed to giving, rather than receiving.”
Vice-President of the International Federation of University Women and one of the founders of RAUW, Professor Shirley Randell, applauded Muganza’s appointment.
“Angelina Muganza has had a distinguished career as a Rwandan Minister, Minister of State and now as a senior member of the Rwanda Public Service Commission” Professor Randell said. “She joins other eminent women around the world who have been elected to be Presidents of national federations and associations of university women in 79 countries”.
In addition to electing Council members, the RAUW General Assembly also featured three speeches by successful female role models, and two performances by FAWE students.
The Honorable Odette Nyiramilimo, a Rwandan representative to the Parliament of East Africa, spoke about the progress that the five member nations are making in establishing the East African Union.
Sita Raghunathan, a retired Manager of Xerox, discussed the limitations and successes she had while working in senior positions in the United States. Ms Raghunathan also answered questions from the audience regarding the difficulties and strategies in successfully juggling career with family responsibilities.
Angelina Muganza gave a presentation on the progress of equal gender representation in the Public Service.
The audience was also entertained by a group of FAWE students who performed a traditional dance and a sketch about the hopes of a girl child.
