Policy resolutions adopted by IFUW triennial highlight issues of concern in communities around the world. These statements set out IFUW's official position and outline the kinds of action that need to be taken to remedy the problems. At the international level, IFUW policy resolutions serve as the basis for IFUW's advocacy efforts with the United Nations and its specialized agencies. IFUW's teams of representatives work actively to ensure that these priority issues are taken into consideration in international debate. Because of IFUW's special consultative status, these representatives have an official presence at the meetings and conferences where new international conventions and agreements are drafted and adopted. There they are able to highlight members' concerns through oral and written statements, special presentations and intense discussions with individual government delegates. Often this work is carried out in coalition with other international non-governmental partners. For these policy resolutions to achieve their full impact, each IFUW national affiliate needs to take steps to bring them to the attention of their respective national governments, along with any policy resolutions adopted by their own national conferences or general assemblies. The Canadian Federation of University Women annually presents resolutions from the IFUW Conference and its own Annual General Meeting to the Canadian Goverment in the form of special policy briefs urging the appropriate government agencies to take action. As a tool for its members, CFUW publishes a special guide - Nuts and Bolts - that explains the legislative process and how to prepare a brief. Other IFUW affiliates can adapt these tools to fit their own national settings. |
