The ideas suggested below focus on providing opportunities for all to become electronically literate. Electronic communication is an important tool in developing a knowledge society and IFUW members, as agents for change, have an important role in lobbying government, the private sector and civil society to develop and implement ICT related initiatives.

Monitoring Government Actions

  • Identify what national e-strategies your government has put in place taking
account of local, regional and national needs and concerns.

  • Identify mechanisms at local, regional and national levels for the initiation and promotion of partnerships among groups working on the development of ICTs.

  • Check with the Egyptian Association of University Women to learn about the programme they developed that combined computer skills training with English classes and low capital income generating projects. Go to http://www.ifuw.org/nfas/egypt/egypt-0100.htm for details.

Protection from Cybernet Crime

  • In order to promote the common good, to protect privacy and personal data ensure that there are laws in your country against the abusive use of ICTs, especially those that ensure children are protected from paedophilia and pornography and the trafficking in and exploitation of human beings.

  • Carry out research on the ethical dimensions of ICTs.

Training in ICT Skills during primary and secondary schooling

  • There is a wealth of material available relating to information and communication technologies education. UNESCO's education pages are an excellent source: http://portal.unesco.org/education
It includes on-line publications for teacher training, resources for teacher use in the classroom, on-line tools for web teaching and learning materials, plus links to other websites on education and ICTs.

  • Encourage young people to become involved in UNICEF’s Voices of Youth. Go to http://www.unicef.org/voy/ to join in the discussions.

  • The Pakistan Federation of University Women has provided computer training as part of its skills development programme for girls. See http://www.ifuw.org/brpid/brpidpakistan.htm

  • The United Nations Development Programme offers a range of ICT Development highlights in different parts of the World - http://sdnhq.undp.org/it4dev/

Access to ICTs

  • The Japanese Association of University women carried out a two year study of how information and communication technology impacts on women and how it can be used to improve women’s future. A report of the outcomes of this programme was presented at the IFUW Conference 2004.
