The ideas suggested below focus on changes through education that will enhance the empowerment of women and girls.

UNESCO Education Ministers have stated that “quality education embraces basic knowledge, values and competencies attuned to globalization yet reflecting the beauty and richness of diversity expressed in belief, spirituality, culture and language.” These are important guiding principles to consider in planning programmes.

E-learning and distance learning
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) held a national forum in 2003 on “Educational
Equity: Integrating Technology in the Classroom”. The forum gave participants an opportunity to network with experts in gender equality, to explore ways of integrating technology equitably across the curriculum and to develop strategies for initiating change in the classroom, the school and beyond. Go to www.aauw.org/ef/ForumonEducationalEquity.pdf and to www.aauw.org/ef/forumrecap.cfm for further details about the forum and the outcomes.

Education for sustainable development
Unesco has developed an online teacher education programme which explores ways in which women are working to promote sustainable development and how these ideas can be integrated into a teaching programme. Go to www.unesco.org/education/tisf/theme_c/uncofrm_c.htm This site lists a variety of Curricular themes that can be re-orientated to integrate an interdisciplinary emphasis on a sustainable future. Each theme includes an Introduction, Objectives, Activities, References and Credits.
Alternatively go to the UNESCO Special Focus pages on Sustainable development - http://portal.unesco.org/en/ev.php-URL_ID=1071&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html
There are Action themes on:
· Biological Diversity
· Fresh water
· Local and indigenous knowledge
· Towards sustainable human development
· The Earth Charter

Health and Family Life Education
The UN Population Fund website offers a number of suggestions of how young people can be assisted to develop a sense of identity, a critical feature in developing a sense of responsibility and purpose. www.unfpa.org/adolescents/participation.htm
Other sources of information for actions with this issue can be found at:
The World Health Organization www.who.org where you can find details about programmes dealing with HIV/AIDS, Smoking, Vaccinations
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS www.unaids.org
UNESCO's website includes a Special Focus on HIV/AIDS covering:
o Aids and culture
o Impact on education
o Out of school prevention
o School based prevention
o Human Rights – Youth e-space
o Field Projects
UNIFEM also provides a portal on gender and HIV/Aids - www.genderandaids.org/.
Education of Boys
In a number of countries governments are considering whether the education system that girls excel at is meeting the needs of boys and preparing young people for real life.
  • Look at the measures used to determine success in school? Do they advantage one gender over another?
  • What are the features of learning needs in the 21st Century? Are these being met by the teaching and learning that measure success in school? Is it the same for boys as for girls?
  • What changes are needed in curriculum delivery, teaching and learning so that boys and girls can learn together and be prepared to work together in life after school?

Education for Employment, Economic Independence, Leadership and Decision Making
The IFUW website includes a special Leadership Resources section.

Another useful resource can be found at www.ilo.org/gender where you will find the “Gender Equality in
the World of Work ILO Electronic Newsletter.”
If you go to www.girlsrights.org/ you will find reference to the Beijing Women’s Document, Section L, The
Girl Child. Strategic objective L.8. states:
Promote the girl child's awareness of and participation in social, economic and political life
and suggests the following Actions to be taken by Governments and international and non-governmental
organizations:
a. Provide access for girls to training, information and the media on social, cultural, economic and political issues and enable them to articulate their views;
b. Support non-governmental organizations, in particular youth non-governmental organizations, in their efforts to promote the equality and participation of girls in society.

Mediation and Post-Conflict Education
There is no better place for children to learn about mediation and conflict resolution than in the school
environment. The Peace Foundation in New Zealand has developed a programme called “Cool Schools”.
Details about the Cool Schools Mediation Programme can be found at www.peace.net.nz/cool_schools.cfm
