IFUW's founders in 1919 believed that women graduates working together could play an important role in helping to preserve world peace. Eighty-five years later, this remains one of IFUW's priorities. Policy resolutions adopted by the IFUW Conference form the basis of our Platform for Peace. The United Nations has declared 2000-2010 as the International Decade for a Culture of Peace of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World 2000-2010. IFUW is an official partner in the Global Movement for Peace and Non-violence working to achieve its aims, including support for the Manifesto for Peace. Our programme theme for 2004-2007, Women: Agents for Change, includes Human Security and Peace as two of its key focus areas. IFUW and its national affiliates advocate for the full participation of women in conflict resolution, peace-keeping and prevention. Our members undertake research and action projects in peace education, for decent standards of living, freedom from all forms of violence and an end to discrimination, especially against women. This section includes examples of activities IFUW national affiliates have undertaken in recent years to meet challenges within in their local communities, including a diversity campaign in Vanuatu, a conflict resolution workshop in Nigeria and a programme for a culture of peace and democracy in Armenia. Also included is a report, "Raising Women's Voices for Peacebuilding", which resulted from research supported by an IFUW International Fellowship. |
