Professional Field and/or present occupation Retired teacher: high school and college.  I have taught English, French, Spanish and German to adults and teenagers.
Experience drafting policy resolutions and amending resolutions

I was the CFUW Director of Resolutions from 2002-2004.  It was my job to vet incoming resolution proposals, work with the proposer to create correct format, check research, language and decide if it should go forward.  I circulated the proposed resolutions to the clubs, received amendments and prepared the final version to be submitted to the voting body at the CFUE AGM.  I ensured it was sent out to clubs if passed at the AGM and prepared material for the clubs to advocate on the resollution and made sure it was put on the CFUW website.

Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position

I am currently completing a four year term as Director of Educational Affairs for CFUW.  In that capacity, I represent CFUW at the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.  I write advocacy letters for CFUW to government for the president's signature, contribute to international discussions hosted by IFUW and the Worldbank.  I also write background material for the clubs to use in their advocacy on issues.

I represent CFUW on two committees of the Canadian Global Campaign for Education which promotes the Millenium develpment goal of Education for All.

In my club, I have been president, chaired the advocacy committee and written advocacy letters, brriefs and visited Members of Parliament.  I served as the Education Chair of Ontario Council from 2004--6 and did the same thing at the provincial level.

I have lived in Europe, (the Netherlands), Asia (India) and visited Latin America, including the El Salvador club and the Montevideo, Uruguay club.  When IFUW met in Ottawa, I hosted the El Salvador delegation at my home for a few days and paid a return visit a few years ago.

Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed

My interest has always been in policy.  I see policy proposals as an instrument to persuade government to enact legislation to improve the life of its citizens and society.  They also educate citizens and enable them to advocate on their own and their country's behalf.

I think my experience of living in different countries will give me an advantage in understanding the resolutions that will be brought forward by IFUW members because I will be familiar with and sensitive to the cultural contextt they come from.

My skill in languages will help in drafting the final versions.  I will be able to understand the Dutch, German, French, English and Spanish members in conversation or on the phone.

How can IFUW best encourage and assist national affiliates to implement IFUW policy resolutions?

I think IFUW can encorage and assist affiliates to implement resolutions by

1. providing them with suggestions as to how they can approach their government

2. give them background material

3. help them in letter writing campaigns

4. provide sample letters

5. comunicate with them on an ongoing basis by email. phone or letter
