| Skills and experience in membership
recruitment and development that qualify you for this position: |
As a psychologist I have worked for more
than 35 years with all kinds of people, people with the
most different social and financial conditions. Similarly,
I have been teaching for more than 29 years at the Faculty
of Medicine of my hometown University. Also, I was head
director of an office that helped victims of domestic violence
and sexual abuse. In addition, I was president of the Department
of Guardianship Council for juvenile offenders
Moreover, I work as the Municipal General Secretary, and
as a Congresswoman too. I have participated in the foundation
of three civil associations. Additionally, I have been member
of the Mexican Federation of 15 years. As a citizen, I write
once a week for a local newspaper. I am mother of two young
adults already at College. Finally, I am a member of the
IFUW Working Group on the Girl Child.
|
| Other skills and experience (volunteer
and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you
for this position |
As Head Director of the office for the attention
of domestic violence and sexual abuse, I achived consensus
among Justice and Health authorities to materialise the
right of women to end pregnancy by rape. I helped to solve
two cases. Also, I supported the Population Council to disseminate
the use of Emergency Contraception, long before the Mexican
authorities accepted its use as a regular method of contraception,
and drugstores sell it.
In the administration of my local goverment, I promoted
the creation of the Municipal Institute Against Addictions,
with a comprehensive program to keep away adolescents from
antisocial conducts. The Institute supported the organization
of sport teams, and other cultural and social activities.
The Institute also helped to merge the activities from the
adolescents with the social work managed by the local goverment,
so they helped to build
recreational spaces, clean the neighborhoods, rebuild the
facades of the houses.
As a legislator I was able to change the law that asked
women to present a no-pregnancy certificate in order to
apply for a job. The result was that the requirement of
no-pregnancy certificate to get a job was prohibited. Additionally,
I made an investigation about the murders of women by their
parterns and the little serious coverage of the media, of
the murders. |
| Goals for this position and the contribution
you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed |
My main goal is to contribute with my experience
and knowledge to achieve all the IFUW objectives, with the
help of all the other members.
a) It is important for the association to bring young professional
women to renovate the present members and to generate a
synergy between the innovation and excitement from the younger
members with the wisdom, knowledge and experience from the
older members. In order to achieve this goal, we must consider
that modern women live their productive and reproductive
lives simultaneously, so it is necessary to stimulate them
to participate, this can be done with cultural exchanges,
scholarships, with the advantage that they already know
how to use all the internet tools to communicate with each
other. It would be an excellent idea, to bring the most
talented undergraduate women that are about to complete
their studies to the association.
b) Another important point it's the disproportion between
the purchasing power of the different world currencies,
this prevents that many women cannot participate in the
professional word due to the lack of financial resources,
so it would be necessary to seek financial support for all
these valuable and intelligent women that deserve an opportunity.
|
| What do you see as the main obstacles
to membership recruitment and retention and what can the Membership
Committee do to help overcome these? |
Because of my professional
experience as a psychologist and public servant, I see as
the main obstacles to memberships recruitment and retention,
it's the disproportion between the purchasing power of the
different world currencies, this prevents that many women
cannot participate in the professional word due to the lack
of financial resources, so it would be necessary to seek
financial support for all these valuable and intelligent
women that deserve an opportunity.
Fellowships are precisely
the kind of things that helps to break the negative cycle
of women without assistance, and opens up the door to hope,
also strengthening self-esteem. The commitment that these
women will be favored will return the benefit received,
on other women forming a cascade of bricks under the principle
of subsidiary.
|
| What do you see as the target audiences
for recruitment drives for IFUW at the national and local
level and how can IFUW best diversify its membership? |
It is important
for the association to bring young professional women to
renovate the present members and to generate a synergy between
the innovation and excitement from the younger members with
the wisdom, knowledge and experience from the older members.
In order to achieve this goal, we must consider that modern
women live their productive and reproductive lives simultaneously,
so it is necessary to stimulate them to participate, this
can be done with cultural exchanges, scholarships, with
the advantage that they already know how to use all the
internet tools to communicate with each other. It would
be an excellent idea, to bring the most talented undergraduate
women that are about to complete their studies to the association.
Even though all women
experience almost the same problems, each region, and each
woman has to fight its own battles. The experience of some
women and groups at solving some specific problems, with
the adequate means, can be timely transmitted, saving time
and effort to others. Using the existing mass media to show
support and solidarity, can soften the authorities in a
region that refuses to respect or recognize the rights of
women.
My
main goal is to contribute with my experience and knowledge
to achieve all the IFUW objectives, with the help of all
the other members.
