Retired Foreign Service Officer of the United States, specializing in Latin American affairs and
especially economics. Most assignments were in various countries in Latin America and
Washington, DC, with one assignment in Africa. |
Experienc in developing and assessing project proposals, and in, implementing, monitoring and evaluating projects: |
Member, Project Grants Committee, Virginia Gildersleeve International Fund; previously served VGIF as Grants Previewer. Work has consisted primarily in evaluating grant proposals received
against the criteria established by the organization and the capability of the applicants for
their successful implementation, then forwarding recommendations to the full committee for
selection and submitting to the Board for approval. As appropriate, I make recommendations
to the committee for improving the grant application and approval process. |
Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position |
While with the State Department, duties varied considerably, depending on Embassy staffing patterns and the local environment, but typically included economic analysis of the host
country; liaison with government officials and the U.S. and local business communities;
briefing visiting Congressmen and other VIPs; and at some posts supporting USAID and
Department of Commerce operations. While not directly project-related, this work has given
me considerable understanding of the cultures of other countries.
Since retirement, I have worked as a travel agent, and traveled extensively throughout the
world. Also, I served for several years as a member of the Budget Advisory Committee of the
Lee County (FL) School Board, giving me insight into the problems of educating K-12 students.
From 2007-2009, I served as Chair of the International Affairs Committee of AAUW, and
currently serve as a member of the Program Committee of WG-USA. |
| Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed |
My goal would be to encourage NFAs to develop projects which further the political, social and economic empowerment of women and girls, and to give them my best judgement on
the likelihood of success.
The members of any NFA are the best placed to know what is needed by the women of their
community, and the resources they have available to help them to improve their condition. However, an independent, outside observer can raise questions and make suggestions which
would increase the likelihood of success, and that is the philosophy I would use in pursuing
my work in this position. |
How would you assist in promoting sponsorship for and donations to the BRPID? |
WG-USA, being new, and with a relatively small, scattered membership, is deliberating ways in which it can engage in fund-raising, and I will encourage this exploration with a view to
supporting Bina Roy. In addition, I would like to attempt to reactivate the interest which
some Branches of AAUW had maintained in Bina Roy in previous years, as well as encouraging
others to help. |
