Professional Field and/or present occupation

My professional field is that of fine art and art administration. I have thirty years of experience as an art administrator, serving as department chairman and division head in undergraduate collegiate education.

Though retired, I continue to teach in the museum education department of the Des Moines Art Center in Des Moines , Iowa , USA and through a consortium of institutions of higher education in Des Moines in an entity known as the Senior College, where I teach persons aged fifty five and older.

I am an exhibiting professional artist. My work has been exhibited in over eighty five one person exhibitions both in the United States as well as in Japan , Malaysia, and in Eastern Europe, including the countries of Ukraine and Russia .

Experience assessing doctoral and postdoctoral academic research proposals:

I served on the Fellowships Committee for the American Association of University Women.

In addition, as professor of art, I have often been instrumental in making “connections” for students to realize their potential by furthering their scholarly studies. Doing so always involved assessment of the proposals of the student's research.

The opportunity to be in involved in meaningful work in Eastern Europe presented itself to me when I had an opportunity to work as a visiting academic at the Pedagogical Institute located in Riga Latvia , shortly after Latvia became an independent country. (My duties involved evaluating the existing art curriculum of the Institute and preparing recommendations for change in that curriculum.) Other opportunities occurred in Japan and in Malaysia . Most recently I have been involved in providing study opportunities for two women from Tanzania to continue their studies at the graduate level in the United States .

Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position

Chairman, Companion Synod Ministry Team, Tanzania, East Africa, Pare Diocese.  Arranged opportunities for study for women in Religious studies focusing on women's' issuues; in deaf education; chairman of Iowa-Terengannu Malaysia Sister State committee, responsible for non currency exchange programs; brought students from US to Malaysia, arranged trips for Malaysian students to Iowa; arranged conferences on Islam in Iowa; Chaired department of art, Division of Fina Arts, undergraduate college in Iowa.  Reviewer for American Library Association; reviewer for Iowa Humanities Association. Immediate past president American Association of University Women in Iowa, active in issues advocating equity for women, Program convener for Women Graduates-USA.

Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed

I have been and remain deeply committed to providing opportunities for women to develop their intellectual and personal capacities to the maximum.  In particular I am interested in seeing that age, ethnicity or nationality do not become the criteria for recognizing excellence but that, instead, the potential for emerging intellectual excellence is fostered and encouraged.  I served on the fellowships committee for the American Association of University Women; I have been a professor of art and department chairman as well as division chairman for thirty years.  My special interest remains steadfast, to help individuals make connections that assist them to realize their potential.

How would you promote sponsorship for and donations to the International Fellowships?

By extending knowledge and information about the IFUW program more widely through the membership of Women Graduates USA, a knowledge that is often minimal.  As program convener for WG-USA I have an opportunity to integrate this information with other aspects of the organization's work.
