Retired, Elected school trustee current, Convenor of the IFUW Resolutions Committee

Knowledge of and/or experience in international relations, particularly in relation to refugees, that qualitfy to this position:

CFUW Ontario Council gives project grants to Ontario Clubs. As a member of Ontario Council for 6 years and for two years as president I was involved in the grant process. Most of the funded projects would be for membership retention and recruitment.

CFUW clubs are project orientated. Many of their projects are fund raisers . However projects also include conferences, school workshops in science, community education sessions on current topics and membership recruitment projects. Ontario clubs submit a report of their projects on a yearly basis to Ontario Council, and Ontario Council evaluates the projects and gives awards.

I have been a public school trustee since 1994. This is a publicly elected position. The funding provided by the government for our school board allows for some latitude in spending. I have been involved in the selection of projects and their evaluation. These projects would include green initiatives, selection of remedial reading programs, mentoring of new teachers, and software upgrading priorities.

I have also served on a provincial committee that evaluated proposed government educational projects.
I have a fairly good knowledge of statistics which is important in data analysis.
I have been involved in budget development for several conferences.

Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position

I have served on the IFUW Resolutions Committee for the last 3 Trienniums. In that position I have I worked with NFAs both by email, phone and at the conferences. The development of an acceptable resolution text requires tact and understanding on the committee's part in our work with NFAs.

In the IFUW Resolutions Committee we are responsible for individual areas of work . However we also consult with each other frequently and decisions are made as a committee. English is my mother tongue. I am able to read documents in French and German which has been useful in the resolutions work. I have regular reliable access to email. The IFUW Resolutions Committee worked throughout the triennium on the Resolutions Regulations and other documentation and then on the resolutions themselves.

I have served ex officio on the Status of Women Committee during last triennium. This has given me a better understanding of the work of IFUW. In addition I have been a constitutional and procedural advisor to IFUW which has increased my understanding of IFUW.

Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed

I would strive to make sure that the projects selected for funding reflect the goals and priorities of IFUW and that the NFAs receive assistance in the implementation and evaluation of their project.

It is important that projects submitted have clearly delineated goals and that the scope of the project is defined. The budget should be reasonable and detailed. The time line and the measures of success for the project should be agreed to by the NFA and the committee. The NFA would need to understand the need for documentation at each stage of the project. I understand that sensitivity and tact would be necessary in working with the NFA. The definition of a successful project and the measurement of success will be somewhat culturally dependent.

What strategies do you think the Committee could use to increase NFA involvement and support for the Hegg Hoffet Fund?

I would work with the other committee members and staff in preparing material that would inform the NFAs and other prospective donors with regard to the projects that the committee has funded.

It may be possible to obtain grant money from foundations and other local sponsors in the country of the project. There is a directory of Canadian charitable foundations. Other countries may have similar directories which would indicate possible sources of funding.

In the past funding has been obtained from VGIF and UNESCO. The possibility of further funding from similar organizations could be investigated.
