Knowledge of and/or experience in international relations, particularly in relation to refugees, that qualitfy to this position: |
For a long time I have admired the work of the Hegg Hoffet Committee. I support the international focus and assistance given to women in
desperate situations.
· Throughout my teaching career I have helped refugee students. Also, I
have gained understanding of the plight and needs of refugees
through friends and neighbours who were refugees or are the adult
children of WW II refugees.
· UNANZ (United Nations Association of New Zealand), National
Committee Member - current.
· UNIFEM NZ National Executive Member since 2006. Recently I have
been involved with the International Projects Committee. For
example our international development project “Gender equality in
decision making and leadership throughout the Marshall Islands”.
This is a development project where UNIFEM NZ supports WUTMI
(Women United Together in the Marshall Islands).
· Led a cultural exchange to Vietnam.
· Ability to network with refugee agencies such as Refugee Health,
International Students Association, Wellington Multicultural Services
Centre. |

and other newsletters in the voluntary sector.

| Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed |
My goal following election is to make a positive difference to the lives of women refugees and displaced women graduates, by:
· Giving a forward momentum to the Fund by raising its profile and encouraging
donations.
· Creating a relevant catch phrase for promotional purposes and awareness raising.
· Preparing articles, newsletters and fund-raising material to ensure the high profile
position of the Fund.
· Developing publicity material for international use and IFUW web site display.
· Enjoying the fun and camaraderie of selling and working at the Hegg Hoffet Boutique
during Conferences. I organised a “shop” at the NZFGW Conference in 2009 to
raise money for the Fund.
· Supporting recipients of the Fund by staying in contact and encouraging their
progress towards their goals.
· Working with refugee agencies in the Pacific region to identify possible recipients and
encourage their application for awards.
· Contacting universities in NZ, Australia and the Pacific to ensure that they are aware
of the Fund and its objectives.
· Networking and presenting to organisations to encourage donations and other
support and participation. |
What strategies do you think the Committee could use to increase NFA involvement and support for the Hegg Hoffet Fund? |
At the first opportunity for the new Committee, an important agenda item would be Strategic Planning. There are several strategies I would
encourage the Committee to consider including:
· Investigate modification of the name of the Fund to give a clearer view
of its purpose. For example: IFUW University Women Refugee
Fund - The Hegg Hoffet Committee.
· Encourage all National Executives to appoint a committee member
with responsibility for the Fund. They in turn encourage each local
Branch to appoint a person on their Branch Committee to be
responsible to their National Executive for involvement and support
for the Hegg Hoffet Fund.
· Review and enhance networking and publicity, for example, encourage
each local branch to circulate information to refugee agencies.
· Encourage each local branch to hold a Hegg Hoffet fund-raising “shop” biannually.
· Establish a culture of annual donations, however small, by each
Branch to the Fund |
What do you see as the role of the convener? |
I see the role of the Convenor is to commit fully to the aims and objectives of the Hegg Hoffet Committee and to fulfil its Terms of Reference. As Convenor I would:
• Establish positive, sound working relationships and communication with and between the
members of this Committee by working as a team.
• Network and liaise closely with the IFUW President and Board of Officers.
• Develop and implement a new fund-raising project periodically.
• Lead by example for the giving of practical and moral support to graduate women refugees.
• Encourage members of the Committee to actively support an international fund-raising
campaign to boost IFUW Hegg Hoffet Funds.
• Give presentations and speeches to promote and grow the effectiveness of the Fund. |
