a. programme development at local, national &
international level:
I have over 40 years experience as an educational professional
in New Zealand.
As a teacher, Deputy Principal in charge of curriculum and
a Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) School Support
Services Adviser I have been actively involved in educational
programme development at both local and national levels.
From 2000 – 2005 I was the Regional Director, National
Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) [Professional
Development] jointly responsible to the VUW College of Education
and the Ministry of Education for development of a programme
to introduce the new NCEA senior qualification system into
New Zealand secondary schools.
As an NZFGW (Wellington) Branch and New Zealand National
President I have worked closely with national and local
committees in the development of programmes to focus on
the chosen key areas of IFUW Programme for Action 2000-2006
and 2007-2010.
b. research and preparation of resource material for individuals
or groups
I am an experienced and computer literate researcher, and
am capable of utilising these skills to develop resource
material and facilitate consultation and discussion of issues.
A major role of my positions as a secondary school science
teacher and Victoria VUW School Support Services Adviser
has been to develop resource material for both secondary
school students and adults across a wide range of educational
areas.
As the Education Standing Committee Convenor for the National
Council of Women (NCWNZ) I have significant experience in
preparing submissions and representing women’s educational
issues at New Zealand Parliamentary Select Committee level.
To assist me in this role I have developed a wide range
of influential subject matter experts both nationally and
internationally in these fields.
c. organization of seminars & workshops
I have wide experience in organising training seminars,
workshops and conferences designed to introduce adult teachers
to new educational programmes and policies. From 2000 to
2005 I organised the training for some 2000 teachers in
the Wellington region for the introduction of the new secondary
school NCEA qualifications system for the Ministry of Education
and the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
I have also had experience at organising and running workshops
and seminars for Careers Service Rapuara (a NZ Government
agency) and NZFGW at local, national and international levels.

| Experience or knowledge of the United Nations, its specialized agencies and national commissions? |
With over two decades of experience within New Zealand
Federation of Graduate Women (NZFGW) and National Council
of Women (NCWNZ) I have a broad understanding of the workings
of the UN, its committees and specialised agencies. As National
President of NZFGW 2003-2006 I was actively involved in
promoting the Millennium Goals and the International Decades
for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children
of the World; Education for Sustainable Development and
the Literacy Decade. NZFGW has consistently promoted the
IFUW’s consultative status and representation on various
UN committees as a strong selling point in both our advocacy
work and recruitment activities.
I have participated over a number of years in the preparation
of New Zealand’s Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO)
reports to the CEDAW Monitoring Committee and as the current
Education Standing Committee Convener for NCWNZ will have
full responsibility for the Education section of the 2010-11
report.
I have attended IFUW workshops in both Perth (Workshop on
the UN moderated by Griselda Kenyon) and Manchester (Restructuring
in the UN: Implications for Women and IFUW – Conchita
Poncini) and followed the actions of our representatives
with considerable interest.
I am a financial member of UNIFEM NZ and am very familiar
with the websites and resource material provided by UNESCO
and UNICEF.

| Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position |
With over 40 years experience as an educational
professional I have been involved in all of the major changes
in the New Zealand education system and am known for my
active participation in bringing them about. I am a current
NZQA marker and moderator in Physics for NZ secondary school
internal assessments and external examinations. I am also
a Paul Harris Fellow of the Wellington South Rotary Club
and a Life Member of the Royal Academy of Dance.
Currently I am the NZFGW Wellington Branch Academic Dress
Convener responsible for the management of their academic
dress hire business. The profits from this are distributed
each year as scholarships and grants to increase educational
and leadership opportunities for women and girls.
As the Education Standing Committee Convenor for the National
Council of Women (NCWNZ) my duties involve suggesting remits
and providing background material arising from Education
issues raised by local NCW branches and Nationally Organised
Societies (NOSs) and NGOs; studying proposed legislation
and drafting submissions to Parliamentary Committees, Commissions
etc; attending and making oral submissions to Parliamentary
Select Committees; preparing informative material for circulation
to Branches and (NOS) and Action Items to collect and collate
members responses on educational matters of concern to the
NCW Council; suggesting follow-up to Council for action.
|
Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed |
• Encourage NFAs to maintain a primary focus
on the priorities detailed in the IFUW Strategic Framework
• Develop through consultation realistic initiatives
to assist NFAs to work together through a programme for
action on IFUW’s Priority Action Areas;
• Encourage the use of web-based technologies to strengthen
networks and discussion forums; mentor and encourage sharing
of expertise between members, local branches, NFAs and IFUW
UN representatives;
• Develop accessible initiatives to enable IFUW Resolutions
to be successfully implemented.
Influencing for women has been at the forefront of my employment
and community involvement, particularly in the areas of
science teaching, career counselling, equal pay, flexible
working hours and improved working conditions. I have developed
skills in responding to legislation, discussion documents
and policy making in many areas in addition to education.
I believe that effective advocacy action can only start
at grass roots level and that top level policies and programmes
can only succeed if they have the support and commitment
of those at that level. Communication is the key to ensuring
that programmes and policies are clearly understood by those
who have the responsibility of carrying them out. I combine
a consultative and non-confrontational style with the ability
to organise complex programmes and events effectively and
efficiently. |
