Sheila R. Buemi-Moore

Geneva, Switzerland
Age: 50-59
Nominated as:
Nominated by:
Assistant Treasurer
Swiss Association

Professional Field and/or present occupation International Taxation
Financial skills or experience at the local, national or international level that qualify you for handling IFUW's finances and financial policy

I am Canadian by birth, but came to Geneva to study international relations (economics & law) and decided to settle in Geneva for private reasons.  I have over 20 years of experience in the financial industry and have held positions that required as much liaising with international institutions as contacts with international groups and clients.

Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position

My combined volunteer and professional experience has always opened doors that create partnerships.  At a private and educational level I have been an active mentor and teacher.  I also participated in the AGFDU project to identify issues and propose solutions to improve the University of Geneva's organizational structures with an aim to promote academic careers (presentation to an official, mandated by the Geneva government).  I have also run for public office for election to the Constituency under the banner of increasing women's participation in redoing the Constitution of Geneva.

I have always been interested in social, economic, legal and academic issues at large.

Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed

As an Assistant Treasurer in Switzerland my main goal would be to ensure the Federation is financially successful.

What ideas do you have for how IFUW could attract outside funding?

Outside funding is very difficult to obtain today because a small percentage of humanitarian organizations or NGOs have misused funds and, as a result, the population has either lost trust or wants to focus on local support.

To obtain funding a history of tangibles is needed, e.g. a track record on "what we have done".  This is the opening statement that needs to be linked to a few targeted projects based on a "model" that could prove practical.  Micro credit has been an excellent concept in helping women entrepreneurs build their local businesses.  In the world of IFUW, education is still an important factor, particularly in the emerging countries.  IFUW could help find a framework to be used locally but in several different States and as a partnershp between the developed and developing countries.
