I
have been Cape Town Branch President on two occasions and am currently
National President for the second time. I am President of FUWA (Federation
of University Women of Africa) and for the past triennium I have
been a member of the IFUW Membership Committee.
I was on the Cape Town Executive Committee of the Business and Professional
Women's Association for many years.
In all these capactities, issues around membership have been crucial.
As National President of SAAWG I arranged a National Research Project
(1999-2001) which included the participation of a number of tertiary
and other institutions. We provided a mayoral function to award
certificates to top South African women researchers (nominated by
their institutions). I initiated an IFUW International
Friendship Tour and a book on the history of SAAWG which also highlighted
the achievements of varous of our members over the years to
celebrate our 80th Anniversary in 2003. All these activities had
as a major purpose the raising of awareness of our association within
South Africa in order to attract more members. Other iniatives
are currently under way.
During the past triennium on the IFUW Membership Committee, I have
participated in a meeting in Geneva, a telephone conference, been
responsible for Africa and assisted in finalising minutes of our
meetings, etc

| Goals
for the position and the contribution the candidate believes she can
personally make if elected or appointed |
There
is much work that can be done to bring in more members even though
competition from other organisations is strong. We need also
to find strategies, as NFAs, to retain such membership.
Having
now been on the Committee for the past triennium, I believe I have
a better insight into the workings of this Committee, its activities
and its challenges and would be very keen to continue my involvement
in this very important aspect for IFUW.
