| Skills
and experience from the last 10 years which qualify her for this position |
I
have been attending IFUW Council meetings and Conferences since
1994 as well as Indian Central Committee meetings and conferences
since 1986 and that has given me insight into problems and perhaps
possible solutions to what we need to do. My habitual patience and
desire to learn from all kinds of experiences helps in my general
NGO work.
Membership of Resolutions Committee in 1998-2001 and Convenership
of the same in 2004-2007 has taught the many ways that we need to
adopt to get things done and as much as possible on time as deadlines
are very important. As ad hoc member of Status of Women Committee
(March 2006 onwards) I have had an opportunity to learn different
needs of IFUW, different parameters and different methods of collaborating
to get things gone. It has been a very valuable experience and I
am learning more as time to Conference is drawing nearer. Part of
learning is dependant on capacity to listen and I have attended
IFUW work as an Observer many times which has helped me in understanding
coming issues and look for solutions for the same.
My NGO work here in Delhi as part of All India Women's Conference
( where I give some time only) and at the school has taught me a
lot. This school was started by my mother in law with 5 girls in
our village in Himachal in 1942, and It has grown to a Co - Ed high
school now. The family has handed it over to the Government but
we are still involved in its requirements and needs. My last visit
to the school was on October 3 2006 to assess how much we need to
spend to get a large room ready for the government to give us Computer
Training Course.
In Indian Federation of University Women's Associations, our NFA,
I prepared IFUW Conference bid for 2001 Triennial Conference. I
have been a member of Central Committee off and on since 1992 and
am convener Constitution Advisory Committee for 2005-2008. Getting
things done, getting them done in time and with cooperation of the
team has been a part of my nature and even if I am passionate about
what we need to do, I do not lose my temper and cool, which has
always been a help in the final outcomes. I am ready to learn what
needs to be done. I am now learning a lot about handling of a web
site as I am helping set IFUWA web site, so that we add to our visibility
and get into modern working mode.

| Goals
for the position and the contribution the candidate believes she can
personally make if elected or appointed |
My
experience of working with IFUW as well as IFUWA gives me an understanding
of problems that we face at this juncture of IFUW's history. I feel
that we can solve these issues however slowly. Impatience, frustration
and disappointment are negative terms and counterproductive. I have
seen this in meetings and I am sure we are capable of rising above
the roughest patch and get out of it. Half of the problem is solved
if we believe in ourselves and feel we can do it and we can tackle
the problems as they come.
When we are facing backward and looking at problems we get a view
as to what must be tackled and looking forward we find how to tackle
it. We are already looking forward, the new dues plan adjusted with
minimal changes, new financial reforms, more involvement of NFAs,
working to get more NFAs replying to queries, votes, advice with comments
from them can add a greater sense of belonging. ( Sometimes one needs
to be tenacious and finally get the results, I am not too bad at it,
I am sure.)
More attention to not only making new members but to how to keep them
involved is very important. In all NFAs members are like shifting
sands. 7 come and 4 go and some times it is 5 come and 8 go, more
attention needs to be paid to how to keep members involved. At the
grass root level knowledge of IFUW and its work with UN agencies and
realization that every bit that IFUW does counts perhaps would make
the younger generation more involved. We have to look into these things
and help make grassroot organizations strong. I have the aptitude
, health, capacity and finances to be able to look at problems from
all angles, which is what is needed today.
My contribution would be my capacity to work and my attitude to that
work. |
