My teaching experience coupled with administrative skills, have helped me to organize programmes at college and at the local level on `Career Fair', `Guidance and Counseling to adolescent girls', 'assistance to Blind School children' `Environmental hazards of pollution and deforestation' I have had the opportunity to organize a cultural programme for a local NGO with underprivileged children of the prostitutes that had a message of accepting and mainstreaming them in society. I have organized Interstate community welfare programmes catering to the cause of the underprivileged girl child. Have organized debates, panel discussions,and symposiums for college and University. Have organized Fund Raising programmes to help economic upliftment of the girl child. I have worked with graduates, post graduates, students from professional colleges, teacher training Institutes and social workers in various awareness programmes. I have convened the BRPID programme on behalf of the local body. Extensive research had to be conducted to diagnose the socio-economic problems and the lacune that needs to be taken care of as per the need of the project. Have undertaken research work from the faculty of Education to study girl child drop out rate in the primary level in Bengal. I have conducted a minor research work on `Menopause and mental stress of women over 55'. As a course coordinator of IPS - L, I design the course material based on the theme `Morality, Ethics and Leadership in Service Learning' for Loreto and USA students. Participated in curriculum revision for inclusion of contemporary socio - political issues, concerns for Human Rights, and International Relations at the Masters level. Have coordinated programmes respecting UN's thrust areas for students and teachers to create sensitivity and awareness. I have organized workshops and seminars both interdisciplinary and multi disciplinary on academic and socio cultural issues. I have initiated and set up the Women's Study Society at Loreto, invited guest speakers, resource persons and held national seminars on women's issues. Have organized advocacy campaigns and workshops on behalf of Loreto as well as for other social organizations. I have presented papers on Education and Women's issues at the local, national and international levels. Noteworthy are UWAsia, Soroptimist International and IFUW Triennium Conference, Manchester 2007. I have been a resource person in a number of local seminars in the discipline of Education and Women's Studies. A number of articles have also undergone publication.

Experience or knowledge of the United Nations, its specialized agencies and national commissions?

My knowledge of United Nations primarily comes from the knowledge acquired from the discipline of Human Rights and International Relations. Both these courses takes into consideration the organization, functions, recommendations and reforms that have been incorporated. Listening and reading of reports about the UN, celebrating UN days, and attending conferences has added to my knowledge content. Advocacy network also has helped me keep abreast of the UN and its functioning My online participation in Women and Work, Women and Employment, Quality Education, Women and Higher Education have helped increase my knowledge regarding the UN and its functioning. Loreto College invites International Faculty members with specialization in different academic disciplines from various centers of Higher Education , from where we gain information and learn about the recent developments and policy planning measures undertaken by the UN regarding multiple Human and Environment issues. All Advocacy measures formulated by the UN at intervals have been part of various programmes.

Other skills and experience (volunteer and professional) from the last 10 years which qualify you for this position

Apart from my voluntary work on behalf of UWA of Calcutta, Soroptimist International of Calcutta, Women's Voluntary Service, Country Women's Association, Loreto College and Calcutta University, the IPS-L programme has given me hands on training. It is a system where we train our students under our guidance to be present at the different service centers of the city and serve them for 24 working hours along with their theoretical studies. This has helped develop the skill of handling the sick, the deprived, the under priviledged and the challenged sections of the Indian Society. As a member of the Women's Cell at Loreto, we teach and train the neighbourhood domestic helps with health and hygiene, nourishment, opening of bank accounts, environmental hazards and protection, literacy campaigns and the green brigade. Working with the Loreto Sisters, organization of blood donation camps, AIDS awareness programmes and social service towards Thalessimic children have also been undertaken.

Professionalism has developed by holding official posts in the local and national bodies. I have officiated as the President and Secretary and Club Representative of Soroptimist International and will take up the post of National Editor of National Association of Soroptimist, India.  Have been the Secretary, Editor, Vice president, Association Representative, member, Seminar committee of UWA of Calcutta. Committee member of Inner wheel club, Rotary District 3291 where commendable work has been undertaken regarding medical check up and financial assistance to underprivileged girl child. Membership Convener of IFUWA (2005-2008) and CIR (2008-2011) Committee member of WVS and Ladies Study Group. Standing member of the Governing Body and Provident Fund committee and Convener of the Library Committee, Loreto College. Core Committee member of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Attended International Conferences at Singapore (2009), Bangladesh (2008) Hong Kong (2007) Manchester (2007) Sri Lanka (2006) South Dakota(2005). Will be attending IPS-L Conference in July 2010.

Goals for this position and the contribution you believe you can personally make if elected or appointed

IFUW, an academic and advocacy organization that has spread its wings all over needs to be assisted further through innovative and constructive ideas related to education, socio-economic and political aspects. We need to focus as to what more we can do for women's status as a global concern. Strategic planning with more dynamism that will enhance and secure women's empowerment is to be considered a thrust area. The Status of Women Committee needs to formulate plans and constructive measures that will better the educational and economic conditions for women all over. Areas where we need to focus are women's financial literacy, reproductive health, consideration for the geriatrics, protection of Mother Earth and concern for the physically and mentally challenged women underprivileged or otherwise.

My goal would be to try and strengthen IFUW in all these endeavors. Ever since its inception, IFUW has traveled a long way with an effort to empower women in multiple ways. I will try to contribute with ideas and a vision to make empowered women agents who will bring in better harmonious and peaceful living on an equal footing with men. My mission will be to study, formulate Action research oriented programmes, believe and profess in global networking and build up team functioning strategies to help resolve if possible the myriads of issues that are confronting women. It will be my task to motivate educated women to build up advocacy groups in their own countries and create awareness programmes to help women. Encouraging and involving young aspiring members in leadership capacities to bring about the necessary changes and improvements will be my priority. Lastly I would take to democratically accepted styles of functioning to accommodate individual and group decisions.
