IWD has been celebrated in Egypt for over 10 years under the direct auspices of Egypt's First Lady, Mrs. Susan Mubarak. The celebrations take the form of meetings, workshops and seminars, all focusing on the themes of: empowering women in society, promoting knowledge of women's rights, and honoring distinguished women for their achievements. In addition, essays are written in all the local newspapers and magazines.
The celebration is not a fundraising event in Egypt, yet there is special focus on how to help women who are supporting their families.
NGO's involved in arranging the events include: The National Council for Women, Red Crescent organizations, health promotion organizations, mother and children's organizations, environment and development organizations, and Arab women's organizations.
