How AAUW celebrated International Women's Day, 2006

The theme was "Celebrating Women's Leadership: Remembering the Past, Honoring the Present and Empowering the Future"

We got the public school system and universities involved in planning and implementation. This gave us access to their auditorium and other facilities such as printing, advertising at minimal or no cost. Besides we wanted the young women in universities to learn about the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

We try to recognize local women, the unsung heroines so to speak, at our function. For the "Empowering the Future" component, we selected 10 high school and college students for recognition through an essay contest.

Some of the local women's organizations joined us and contributed in cash and kind. We got some business men and women to give donations. We got our local grocery store to supply the refreshments in 2005 and a student organization in one of our universities to cater the refreshments in 2006.

They developed a PowerPoint presentation on "Women Pioneers of the World". We also got local music and dance groups to perform for us. In 2006, three international dance groups performed for $50 each.
