Israel Association of University Women
was founded in 1932 during the British Mandate with headquarters in
Jerusalem. Membership is open to all women graduates of universities
or institutes of higher learning, without discrimination of race, religion
or colour.
An
affiliate of the International Federation of University Women, the IAUW
subscribes to its aims and objectives. The IAUW strives to achieve equal
status and opportunity in the academic world: it represents academic
women in local municipal and national institutions: to encourage women
to higher education.
Israel
being a country of immigration from over 70 countries IAUW has
taken upon itself the task of helping in the absorption of academic
women and encouraging high school students to enter the universities
and colleges.
IAUW
forms part of the Council of Women’s Organizations in Israel, an NGO
affiliated to the International Council of Women and is an associate
member of the Parliamentary Commission on the Status of Women.
One
of the most important current activities is the one-on-one tutoring
of Ethiopian immigrant girls embarking on an academic career. Scholarships
are awarded annually by the National Board and several Branches.
Branch
activities include lectures, discussion groups, Hebrew and English literary
circles, cooperation with other local bodies including representation
on local Councils, protection of the environment and enhancing social
cultural and economic endeavours on the local level.
Nationwide
Symposia are held annually and IAUW occasionally hosts international
seminars.
