The Palace of the Peaks:
Chatsworth, 17 August 2007

IFUW Post-Conference Tour

Chatsworth House, the home of the 12th Duke & Duchess of Devonshire, is one of Britain’s favourite stately houses. Known as ‘The Palace of the Peaks’, it lies in the beautiful Peak District of Derbyshire and some of you may know it as the setting for the film ‘Pride & Prejudice’.

ITINERARY

  • Depart from Manchester campus at 8:00 am and return at approximately 19:30.
  • On arrival, coffee and biscuits will be served. Then you will be taken on a guided tour of the house. After the tour there will be an illustrated lecture about the life of one of the women who helped shape the house, the county and the country – Bess of Hardwick or Georgiana, wife of the 5th Duke of Devonshire.
  • A two-course lunch will be followed by an hour-long mini-train tour around the grounds, including Chatsworth Hunting Tower. This may be in two groups, depending on numbers. There will also be time to explore the gardens and shop.
  • If you can face a cream tea before the return journey, afternoon teas will be available (cost not included) in one of the restaurants and tearooms.

This will be a great day out and the private tour with guide, as well as lunch in a private room, will make it a special experience!

Please note that there is no wheelchair access to most of the house and there are a lot of steps – the house was built in a very different age!

COST

The cost of the tour is £55.
