But Who Will Teach the Children? Global Teacher Recruitment and Sustainable Education
Madeleine Mattarozzi Laming, Australian Federation of University Women
The apparent world-wide shortage of teachers has serious implications for the sustainability of education in developing nations as an increasing numbers of teachers migrate to developed nations, including Australia, to take advantage of higher salaries and better working conditions. This paper examines the extent of the shortage and suggests ways of preventing the drain of experienced teachers from countries that cannot afford to lose them. In particular, this paper examines the recruitment of personnel from other professions into teaching.
