Official Announcements
from the IFUW Network
The IFUW Board of Officers has proposed a project to gather existing statistical data on women in higher education, both as students and academic staff, to determine the level of equality that has been achieved, with a view to improving gender equality in higher education through highlighting areas of concern. The scope of the project will be to focus on the collation and analysis of the available data to produce a report on the status of gender equality in higher education.
We are looking for nominations from NFAs and Independent members for people with special expertise for a working group to take on this project. Nominees should be experienced researchers, statisticians, social scientists or the like and people with a knowledge of the terminology of higher education and the international differences in terminology who would like to take on this project and see it through to completion.
The project will have two phases: an initial phase that will produce a preliminary report in time for the 2009 World Conference on Higher education in July 2009; and a final report in time for the 30th IFUW Conference in Mexico in August 2010.
Names of nominees, together with their CVs and statements up to 100 words indicating their relevant expertise and why they can contribute to the project, should be emailed to
by 7 January 2009.
This project has been developed by the Board to support the IFUW priority on promoting Access to and the Advancement of Women in Higher Education and more specifically on improving gender equality in higher education institutions. The group will work by email to produce the reports and will use the website to inform NFAs and members of its activities and progress. Deadline for nominations: 7 January 2009.

The IFUW Working Group on the Girl Child and the Status of Women Committee are inviting national federations, associations, local groups and independent members to share information about action at the national and local level.
The Working Group on the Girl Child is interested in action promoting education for the girl child carried out over the last ten years. Their request is part of an inventory designed to share information and help NFAs in developing and developed countries learn from good practices and to avoid pitfalls in promoting education for girls.
The Status of Women Committee would like to hear about action IFUW members throughout the world have carried out since the Manchester Conference in 2007.
