Messsage to IFUW Leaders on 25 September 2006: Consultation on Possible Constitutional Amendments

The IFUW Board of Officers and Constitutional Advisers have carried out a review of the IFUW Constitution and By-laws. During this process, the Board has identified a number of changes needed to enable the statutes to reflect new needs and to protect our organization in a changing world. Other minor and editorial changes are needed to provide greater cohesion and clarity.

The Board has prepared a document with the substantive proposals that it is thinking about proposing to the 29th IFUW Conference in Manchester in August 2007. Also included is a proposal from the Membership Committee.

Between now and 1 November 2006, national federations and associations will have an opportunity to comment on these proposals. Based on this input, the Board will finalize its proposals before the 15 November 2006 deadline for the submission of amendments.

The final proposals, together with the Board’s suggestions for minor and editorial changes, as well as any proposals submitted by national federations and associations, will be circulated to NFAs at the end of the year. National affiliates will be given another opportunity to discuss the final proposals in 2007 prior to the Conference.

NFAs are requested to discuss the proposals as widely as possible with their members and to send their comments to IFUW Headquarters by 1 November 2006, indicating support or any objections.

Questions and comments should be addressed to nfa-leaders@ifuw.org. Individual members are welcome to share their views either through the wayforward@ifuw.org or through the IFUW Member Forums – www.ifuw.org/forums.

  • Message to NFA-Leaders - 4 April 2006: AAUW Dues Situation

We are writing to inform you about an exchange of communications between the IFUW Board of Officers and the American Association of University Women (AAUW) over their dues obligations.

In March 2006, we received a telephone call from Ruth Sweetser, President of AAUW, outlining a proposed plan. We responded with a memo summarizing our understanding of what had been presented in the telephone conversation. Ruth Sweetser replied to this memo further explaining AAUW's position and proposal.

The Board has sent an initial reaction indicating that the proposal is unacceptable, but we do not wish to give a final response before consulting all national affiliates.

We would appreciate it if each national federation and association would send their comments on AAUW's proposal by 15 April 2006 so that we may give AAUW an official response as soon as possible.

Links to the AAUW letter and the initial Board response are given below.

    Best wishes
    Griselda Kenyon, IFUW President
