Harmonization of Family Responsibilities and Women's Careers

The project of the Slovene Union of University Educated Women, "Harmonization of Family Responsibilities and Women's Careers" attempts to motivate Slovenian women of all ages, especially working mothers, to lobby for better career options and equal family responsibilities. Since 1997, the Slovene Union has been lobbying their government for the introduction of part-time work, job sharing, 12 months maternity leave for mothers, and equal career opportunities for women.

As a result of constant lobbying activities, the proposal for part-time work and job sharing has now been added as an amendment to existing family law. In November 2001, further amendments were added concerning paternity leave, and the right of parents of children under 3 to work limited hours. However, strong traditional family values still exist in many areas of the country and present a barrier to the acceptance of the concept of gender equality. Despite this, the Slovene Union continue to work towards breaking down barriers through public education.

In 2006, the Slovenian Union of University Women organized panel discussions, seminars and round table discussions in varous cities, and made presentations on TV and in the national press.
