The Bangladesh Federation of University Women (BFUW) was established in 1956 as the East Pakistan branch. Then after the liberation, the name was changed to the current one in 1972. BFUW was affiliated with IFUW in 1974.

 

Projects

 

BFUW has been running a women's college since 1965. This college was judged the best college in 1994 in the city of Dhaka.BFUW started the Uttarkhan Health and Vocational Project in 1985. This project combines vocational training with literacy classes, health services and health awareness programs. The Japanese Federation helped with this project until it became a Bina Roy Project partnered with the Australian Federation.

Project 5-O

BFUW is also a member of Project 5-O Bangladesh, CEDAW Forum and works together with other NGOs.

Other Associations

BFUW has the current presidency of SAARCFUW (South Asian Association For Regional Cooperation of University Women) consisting of Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka. BFUW is also a member of UWA.

Seminars

BFUW always has seminars on burning issues. BFUW organized a national seminar on Child Abuse in 1997, bringing together representatives from Women's NGOs, the government, the media and law enforcement agencies. The meeting covered child abuse in the industrial sectors, non-commercial sexual abuse of children and child abuse affecting domestic workers.
